Prayer Update Feb 2026 I explain what I know of the situation in Mexico after the death of the Mencho.
Prayer Letter for David and Tule Cox Mexico
February 2026
Our Church Growth. We have been very pleased with some new visitors to our church. Alejandro and Izsu continue to be regular attenders now with their daughter Valeria. We were able to eat with them after church one Sunday recently, and they work in evangelism outreach in their former church. Alejandro has a weekday Bible study with his family (his sisters I believe). We will give him an opportunity to preach Sunday School in the future and see how he does. They are very attentive in the services and take notes. Here in Mexico there is a lot of flu going around. It is not Covid, but it is very serious. We have had several in our fellowship that have missed because of it. Antonio has had it since November and with two months of antibiotics, and he still has it.
The death of Mencho. This cartel boss was one of the most wanted criminals in the world. They tried to capture him, and his body guards resisted, and a shoot out occurred and “el Mencho” was wounded. They were flying him to Mexico City (Guadalajara is several hours from Mexico City), and he died in transit. The situation is hard to explain. Both the current president (Claudia Sheinbaum) and the former president Manual Lopez Obrador (both of the Morena party) have taken a posture towards the drug cartels and mafia which they represent as “hugs not bullets” (in Spanish “abrazos no balazos”). Many have criticized them of this hands-off posture, because they are either protecting the cartels or are paid by them. Either way, they let the cartels run free. “Narco government” is used against them.
The Mexican army has been saturated throughout the country for about 10+ years now. There are questions about the cartels paying key officers there also. Since the police are basically useless (corrupted), the government has activated the National Guard to run patrols throughout different places in the country to try to discourage crime. We have them in our part of the city. They are approaching the size of the army.
How and why the Mexican government suddenly changed their posture is unclear. Sheinbaum and Obrador are basically Communists in their outlook. They have been supporting Cuba with millions of barrels of free oil to prop up Communism there. (Recently that fact came out in airing dirty laundry, but it was not public knowledge beforehand.) But people here have gotten tired of the Morena party it seems. Recently, there has been indications that both Sheinbaum and Obrador have had bad blood between, Obrador seeing Sheinbaum losing the popularity of their Morena party, and Sheinbaum disliking all the dirty laundry coming out about Obrador’s tenure as president.
All of this is causing great tension and distress in everybody here. Since they are Communists, some see the possibility of them going full Communist and using strong arm tactics. Other political groups with different orientations are pressuring the Morena party, all the while planning to overthrow them in the next election. The states where Mencho’s group were the strongest are seeing the most chaos. But the entire country is both relieved and nervous about what will happen next.
Sheinbaum’s religious views are bad. She comes from a Jewish background, and most probably a lot of Catholicism mixed in, but after her win for presidency, she had a “cleansing” from Shaman women priests (witch doctors) in the presidential palace (it was on TV). Usually the Mexican priests have a Catholic Mass instead. So I saw no Mass for her. Her orientation is just “batty” (I don’t know how to describe crazy people very well).
A man that comes occasionally, Miguel Angel, has two grown sons still living with them, Gabriel and Moses, and both are in the National Guard, and their sons are being called up to patrol troublesome areas. Both are unsaved. We have not seen violence in our area up to this point. What is left of Mencho’s group is regrouping, and nobody knows what they will do, but most assuredly they will make a fuss. Pray for peace in our country.
